While watching Game 3 against the Astros, I was made aware of the fact that Leury Garcia is the longest tenured Sox player. That’s crazy, especially since he’s only been with the Sox since 2013. His contract also expired following the 2021 season, meaning it’s not guaranteed that he will come back in 2022. I believe that he should come back, and here’s why.
- He’s a solid utility player. You name a position, and Leury has played it. He’s played SS in recent years as Tim Anderson has gotten injured, and he hasn’t been half bad. He can also play all three OF positions, 2B, and 3B.
- His hitting was league average last year. That’s not bad for a utility player. His OPS+ was 96 according to baseball-reference, which isn’t bad at all.
The Sox should be able to nab him on a one year deal for $1 – 5 million or so. In my eyes, that’s totally worth it to retain him.
Looks like you got your wish.
